Taking It up a Notch – Scuba Diving with Sharks
Are you a fan of scuba diving? If the answers yes, consider ramping it up a notch and dive with sharks. This may sound scary. However, there’s a higher chance dying climbing a ladder while taking the star off your Christmas tree, than scuba diving with sharks. There’s nothing better than getting up close and personal with these misunderstood creatures. So, if you’re considering scuba diving with sharks, here’s a bit of advice.
1. Swot Up
You need to do your homework – especially if your dive involves larger shark breeds. However, always follow the instructions given by local diving professionals. This always trumps the knowledge you think you ‘know.’ This is imperative because shark behavior varies massively between species. Therefore, different procedures will apply.
2. Ask Yourself These Questions Before Selecting an Operator
Before committing to a diving operator, ask yourself the following questions;
- How long has the company been established?
- Does this company have a good safety record?
- Do they have any rules and procedures for divers?
- Are they able to answer any concerns you have?
The answers to these questions will give you a good indication as to whether this company is worth trusting.
3. Get Suited and Booted
When diving with sharks, you’ll have to ensure your equipment meets the guidelines provided by your operator. You’ll usually have to wear a full wetsuit, black gloves, and a hood. This is necessary for your protection.We recommend dressing in gear you know you’re comfortable with. You don’t want to be distracted while spending time with these magnificent animals. Be aware; sharks are attracted to the contrast of colors, i.e., a black wetsuit against white hands – so be prepared.
4. Be Alert at All Times
For your safety, you need to be aware of your surroundings. This includes:
- The sharks
- Boat
- The force of the current
- Any other divers
- whether you’re drifting.
- Any instructions given to you.
Staying alert during your dive will help you get the most out of this experience.
Where Should I go?
If you want to see the whitetip shark, head over to Cat Island in the Bahamas. These sharks are beautiful and known for their peaceful yet curious nature. However, if you’re hoping to get a glimpse of the bull-shark, then Beqa Lagoon in Fiji is the place to go. Plus you’ll see loads of brightly colored fish during your dive. You may also get to see tiger sharks and hammerheads.If it’s the whale shark you’re after, the best place to dive is Isla Mujeres in Mexico. This size of this breed is particularly mesmerizing. Or if you want to see Galapagos sharks, Hawaii is the place to be. During your dive, you may see sandbar and tiger sharks.
