Becoming a Rescue Diver: Why Everyone Should Learn to Rescue Dive

There are an estimated 1,569 emergency room admissions after scuba diving each year in the U.S.A.

Rescue diver training can help mitigate or even prevent these incidents.

So, you’ve got your advanced open water, and you’re looking to up your game. Rescue diving is the next rung on the barnacled ladder.

But what are the benefits of becoming a rescue diver? What will you learn? Is it worth the time and money?

Better diving is mere meters away. Read on to learn how to reach it.

Rescue Diver Training Is One Step Closer to Divemaster Status

Are you looking to teach scuba diving in NJ or elsewhere? You need a rescue diver certification before you start your divemaster training.

To complete instructor training you need to be able to respond to emergencies. You will also need a minimum of 60 logged dives to achieve divemaster status.

Your rescue diver training will count towards this. It opens up internship opportunities too; dive for free.

You Will Be Prepared for Diving Emergencies

Rescue divers can spot diver stress and rescue situations. Panicked divers are a threat to themselves and others. Rescue diving teaches you how to calm them and get them to safety

Decompression sickness (DCS), A.K.A. the bends, is the most infamous diving threat out there. Rapid ascents from depth can cause gas bubbles to enter the blood. Rescue divers learn to help DCS cases.

Narcosis can occur in deep dives and some divers are more prone to it. Rescue diver training teaches you how to help a narcosis case.

You Will Learn Emergency Response Skills on Land

Rescue divers need to know cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If a diver stops breathing when they surface, your CPR skills could save their life.

You will learn first aid and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). These are amazingly intuitive these days. Once the pads are in place, the AED does a cardiac diagnosis and issues electrical charges.

After training, you will be able to respond to emergencies anywhere. Some companies offer pay rises for first aid and CPR-training employees.

You Will Be a Better Dive Buddy

You will be more confident with a variety of dives. Your dive buddy will feel more secure and progress faster. Your buddy checks will be more detailed and specific.

You will be able to spot issues in your own physiology too. That said, you should never dive without a dive buddy, no matter your level.

Did you drop something? Rescue diving includes search and recovery training. You will know how to find lost cameras, keys, torches, and anything else a diver can carry.

You will be popular when you surface for sure!
